Culinary
A very valuable spice consisting of the dried stigma of a special autumn crocus. In India often roasted before being soaked in milk, the milk being used to impart colour to rice dishes. Combines well with fish and sea food.
Also used in Iran to impart colour, this time being pounded together with a cube of sugar and soaked in a buttery syrup.

Medicinal
Large dosages could be fatal but its recognised to be antispasmodic, diaphoretic, carminative, emmenagogic and sedative
